Publish date: 2024-05-20

Toorak-based tourism entrepreneur Celia Burrell has listed a beachfront Sorrento block with a massive $16.5m-$17.5m asking range.

Measuring 1312sq m, the site at 3080A Point Nepean Rd on Tideways beach is vacant apart from a shed.

Public records show the land is owned by Toorak author and former model Celia Burrell, who is known for transforming a rundown Western Australian cattle station named El Questro into an internationally-renowned wilderness park and luxury resort.
The famous WA property has hosted luminaries including Elton John, Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary Of Denmark.

Why sellers are feeling confident this Spring

In 1991, Ms Burrell and her husband, British aristocrat William Burrell – who inherited part of his fortune from his grandmother, doyenne of the Penguin publishing empire – purchased 283,279ha in the Kimberly region where they built El Questro.

The couple sold the business for $17.4m in 2005.

In 2006, Ms Burrell, who has published serveral books, was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia for service to the tourism industry and raising awareness of the Kimberley’s cultural significance.

The vacant Sorrento block’s listing states that its title “offers new development entitlements within its generous building envelope setting the foundations to design and create one of Australia’s most revered waterfront homes (STCA).”

Peninsula Sotheby’s International Realty managing director Rob Curtain has the listing.

The address is set to become Sorrento’s third most-expensive property.

Property records show Sorrento’s $30m record price was set by a house at 3510 Point Nepean Rd in 2021.

Another house at 5 Kildrummie Court fetched $25.2m in 2020.

The property is being sold via expressions of interest.

Registrations of interest close at 5pm on November 28.
